Desktop Computer Not Powering On

Troubleshooting Guide: Desktop Computer Not Powering On (For Non-Technical Users)

If your desktop computer won’t turn on, follow these simple steps to try and fix the issue. If nothing works, contact IT support for further help.

1. Check the Power Source

  • Check if the power outlet works:
    • Plug something else (like a lamp or phone charger) into the same outlet. If it works, the outlet is fine. If not, try a different outlet.
  • Check the power cord:
    • Make sure the power cord is firmly plugged into the wall and the back of the computer.
    • Look for any obvious damage, like cuts in the cord.

2. Inspect the Power Supply

  • Is the power supply switch on?:

    • Some computers have a small switch on the back where the power cable plugs in. Make sure it is switched on.
  • Look for signs of power:

    • Check if any lights are on, or if you hear any sounds (like a fan spinning). If there’s no sign of power, the power supply might have an issue.

3. Try the Power Button Again

  • Double-check the power button:
    • Press the power button firmly once. If nothing happens, try holding it down for 5-10 seconds, then press it again.

4. Unplug and Reconnect Accessories

  • Disconnect external devices:
    • Unplug all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.), and try turning the computer on with only the monitor, keyboard, and mouse connected.

5. Check for Signs of Damage

  • Look for physical damage:
    • Check if there are any burnt smells or visible damage on the back of the computer.
    • If the computer smells burnt or shows damage, stop troubleshooting and escalate to IT support.

6. Leave It Unplugged and Try Again

  • Unplug the computer for a few minutes:
    • Unplug the power cord from the wall and the computer, wait for about 5 minutes, then plug it back in and try again.

When to Contact IT Support

If none of the above steps work, it’s time to contact IT support. Be sure to mention the steps you’ve already tried. Let them know if you noticed any of the following:

  • No lights or sounds when trying to power on.
  • Burning smells or physical damage.
  • Power turns on briefly but then shuts off immediately.

By following these basic troubleshooting steps, you can often identify the issue. If you’re unsure or uncomfortable trying any of these, it’s best to escalate to IT support for assistance.
